KIDS ZONE!

The cyclepath runs through the Old Railway walk along the disused railway providing a relaxing ramble and an opportunity to enjoy many of the distinctive birds of the site. If you have a head for heights you can gaze at remarkable views of the northeast and west bog from the observation tower. You should expect the walk to take about 30 minutes in each direction. The route is suitable for wheelchairs. A permit from the Warden allows access along the Riverside walk for those with a particular interest in bog biology. The permit ensures your safety and helps protect the habitat and its wildlife. The circular walk may take up to 4 hours and you must ensure that you are adequately prepared. Stout boots and waterproof clothing are essential whatever the weather.

Q: Why is the Cors Caron protected?

A: Bogs have not escaped our eagerness to exploit every acre of land. Throughout this century, peat lands have been fast disappearing as their rich organic soil has been reclaimed and fertilised for agriculture or forestry, or more recently as a source of peat for horticulture. 95% of intact peat lands have been destroyed by such developments. There are few left intact.

Educational Facility: The southeast bog offers students an opportunity to study the ecology of the habitat. The educational facility has been designed specifically for older students and specialists. Parties of students must apply to the Warden in advance for a permit (you do not need a permit for the cycle path itself) since the habitat is fragile. A descriptive handbook is also available

School children: School children are welcome to use the Old Railway walk which is more suitable for their requirements. You can print out quizzes or try our "I Spy" challenges for the trail (click on Kids Zone section of the website for this) to take along with you for the under 12's.
